Get your rest PJ... get well.
Guest Writers might be able to take
up the slack...
Anyone have any suggestions?
I got a
suggestion, For one, I think that an article from Brian
Cantwell Smith on what
he thinks of software patents would be
wonderful. In case you missed his
talk that was part of the
C-SPAN and Library of Congress "Digital Future Series"
here is the link
to the series! What is digital is related to what is, and
is not
(most in congress look at digital as the whole, and not the reality
that
digital is just another marketing term)!
see: http://www.c-span.org/co
ngress/digitalfuture.asp
You do need RealPlayer to view the posted
segments.
This on is great (they all are, but this one if tied
into logic
of software patents is really good stuff):
"Monday, January
31
Brian Cantwell Smith, dean of the Faculty of Information Studies at
the
University of Toronto Smith, the author of "On the Origin of
Objects,"
combines degrees in computer science and philosophy and is an expert
on
the interdisciplinary convergence brought about by digitization. His
talk is
titled, "And Is All This Stuff Really Digital After All?"

Forgiven? There is not any need to do that, because you haven't done anything
wrong. As someone who has been very, very sick for the last couple of years, I
completely understand.
Consider yourself very much appreciated and loved by those who have followed
your site for the last several years. Now take the time necessary to get better.
Please?

PJ, I suspect that I'm not the only one that will be happy to see that you are

Take a break, You deserve it, PJ. It's been a long stretch.
No-one will think the less of you for it - everyone needs a break now and then.
Here's something totally off-topic that's been buzzing round my head for a while
(since you suggested doing it). Probably a bit late, but here it is anyway:
SHOW US THE CODE v0.9
================
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
you say we took something of yours (show us the code)
you say that we put it into something of ours (show us the code)
didn't take us long to figure out (there is no code)
'cause it's a shakedown
it's just an almighty bluff
where's your evidence?
where's your millions of lines?
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
we're sick of you now (show us the code)
we won't take any more (show us the code)
don't think we're easy (just show us the code)
guess it's the stock plan
guess it's the bottom line
you never really thought
that we'd disprove all your lies
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
'cause now your future's laid out (show us the code)
you know you'll never will show us the code
didn't take us long to figure out (there is no code)
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
show us the code, show us the code
SHOW US THE CODE
you know it's over
you know you're out of control
and now the courtroom's
the last place you want to be
show us the code
show us the code
show us
show us
you can't show us the code
============
Dedicated to PJ. You know what you've done is so important, and we thank you
from the bottom of our hearts.
It's no masterpiece but if anyone wants to help improve it, you're welcome to do
so.

PJ,
Even in the first summer of Groklaw we wondered how you could keep up such
a pace. Like Lou Gehrig you never seem to miss a day without putting up
something of importance or interest. It's a feat that I doubt I could match.
We admire you for this dedication and maintaining a fair and balanced outlook
while doing so. I will miss you greatly while you're on vacation, but I will be
happy the whole time. You've earned a break. More importantly, we all want
many more years of your insights, and for that you need to have some down time.
If the future maybe we should expect and insist you take vacations like the rest
of us mortals :)
Hope you feel better soon, and have a good time off.

Well, I know a little about what you are feeling -- at least the sick part.
Seems like there's a bug going around that just hangs on forever. It's not bad
enough to really feel like you can take a sick day, but you just feel like
you're operating on 3/4 power. Only way to shake it is to "kick back and sleep
a little."
So, maybe it's time for the rest of us to take a step back and
let you get some rest. It really sucks when you're running a one-man-show (or
one-woman-show) because you feel like the world will fall apart if you take some
time off. Then, something knocks you off your feet, and you find that we really
can survive on our own for a while. ;-)
Hope you feel back up to full
strength soon!!

And I've got the Pacer Primer that PJ wrote a while back.
If someone, Mathfox?, wants to let me know and maybe set up a separate main

Of course, they won't come with the incisive (para-)legal commentary that PJ

Your article-or-two-a-day rhythm, all too often posted in the wee hours of the
morning, can only take its toll.
You deserve a rest, and by that I mean a long one if necessary.
My rule of thumb when doing R&R from an illness is to not return the day I
feel stronger again, but a few days later. And I am also very fortunate to be
able to take several vacations every year. I hope you give yourself time to
recover, *plus* a vacation. It can only do you good.
Get well soon.
Sean.

I always thought it was a good idea if most of us did not know exactly who you
are or where you live. This affords you the privacy and anonymity you need and
deserve, and allows Groklaw to stand on the merits of its content.
Now, however, I wish I did know exactly who you are and where you live, because
I'd like to come over there and care for you until you are well again.
Please nurse yourself carefully back to health; you have the well-being of one

Please take care. You might start with a few nights of sleep and a 'cat nap'
whenever you feel down. Make sure you get enough fluids.
If you continue to have problems and can not sleep, a visit to an M.D. is
probably in order. If you do see a doctor, it would be helpful to keep a diary
of everything you eat and drink for a couple of days before your visit. Also
write down anything else you think is important. Doctors are notorious for how
little time they spend with each patient so you have to be prepared to make the
best use of the time they give you.
Someone suggested that you see a 'shrink', but that should only be done if you
think it might be helpful. They can only help if you really want and need help.

PJ, last August I found out I have colon cancer. In September I began radiation
and chemotherapy. After losing about 30 pounds from the treatments, I traveled
to New Orleans in October for surgery. That took three and a half feet of large
intestines out.
I returned home from NO in late October with a drain still in me for fluid
draining into my abdomen. When I went back to NO in November to have the drain
removed, the doctors found a leak at the top and bottom of my resection, put two
more drains in and put me back into the hospital for eleven more days. I lost
another fifty pounds and was so emaciated they had to resort to feeding me
through a tube in my arm.
When they got my weight stabilized, they sent me home with all three drains in
and told me if the drainage didn't stop, they'd have to open me back up.
Luckily, within three weeks my most of my fluid was clear and the bulk of it had
dried up.
Another trip to New Orleans and they finally removed all the drains and tubing.
I was put on an ice cream and cake diet in hopes of getting my weight back up,
which helped me gain thirty pounds back.
I returned to work in late December and my chemotherapy port was removed from my
chest in January. I am scheduled for a followup PET scan and CTscan this
Wednesday to see if any cancer cells are left.
I've posted this to let you know you must take care of yourself, or you can't
help anyone else. It takes 100% effort to fight a bad physical or emotional
situation. Anything less is asking for trouble. It can be done and I'm proof of
that.
Here it is six months later and I've been so bad off, people who saw me in
November thought I wasn't going to last another week. That's how bad I was, so
you can do it, but it takes dedication and lots of personal attention to
yourself. Now I'm working full time, jogging and riding my bike again.
Oh, and the tumor they found was four inches by three inches.

Pj, I certainly hope that you feel better real soon.
To the rest of the readers, can PJ now sue SCO for contributing to her declining
health? If they hadn't played games for so long, this would all be over by now
and PJ would have had time to take a proper vacation without having to try to
keep SCO honest. (chuckle)
And think of how the rest of us feel now. With PJ taking time off (and PJ, it
is WELL DESERVED time off), the rest of us will go into withdrawals. ;-)[ Reply to This | # ]

Dear PJ,
A vacation for you is long overdue and more than earned!!
Just overseeing my own small business every day often leaves me feeling
exhausted and horribly stressed, though I love what I do very much. I used to
think that I was letting others down if I took time for myself and continued to
work nights and weekends for nearly 3 years.
Last year my health finally deteriorated to the point where taking a rest was no
longer a matter of choice. These days I am still working long hours, but have
learned that when I take regular breaks I actually get more work done and can
solve problems faster than when I push too hard.
Sometimes a girl's just gotta stop and smell the roses :o)
I've often wondered where you get your energy, because the schedule you've
maintained and the amount of work you've done for all these years has been
absolutely, stunningly amazing.
If you walked away from Groklaw tomorrow, it would still stand as an incredible
learning site. A person could peruse the many articles and pages every single
day, for years to come, and still always learn something new. It's a body of
work to be truly proud of.
I'd like to join all of the other Groklaw members in sending you heart-felt Get
Well Wishes, and warm Thank Yous for all you've done. Your hard work is
appreciated more than you can ever know.
(sending LOTS of smiles too! :o)

PJ,
The perfect place for you right now is the "Kona Village Resort" on
the Big Island of Hawaii. It is designed specifically for this kind of
"disconnect and relax" type of break you need.
They do not allow cell phones or computers there, and there are no TV's or land
phone lines to the private hales (huts) you reside in. It really is a time to
disconnect from technology and re-energize.
The hales are raised off the beach, and are beautiful!
Some interesting stuff:
- It is owned by Ty Warner (the guy who become a billionaire from selling
"Beanie Babies")
- This is the place that Steve Jobs went to, to ponder if he should take over
the reins of Apple again
- Turtles sun themselves on the beach there almost everyday
- Food is *fantastic* and plentiful
- Reading a good book on the hammock outside your private hale is truly a
relaxing experience
==========

Description:
Private thatched-roof cottages open to the beach and lush lagoons on the Kona
Coast. Meals and activities included.

Hmm two pieces of news today -
1)Microsoft retires Clippy
2) PJ on leave for Health Reasons
Coincidence? I think not. Clearly the Mysterious PJ has been a psuedonym for
Clippit the paperclip for the last few years. Microsoft, having finally gotten
wind of the insider betrayal, has terminated Clippy's contract, thus
"PJ" must lay low for a while til things cool off.

Hey, PJ!
First of all, get well, soon, we are all pulling for you and hoping and
praying.
The reason for the Michael Jordan metaphor is, when he came back the second
time, he was the only person from the time he returned to the time he retired
again not to miss a single game for illness, injury, or suspension. Considering
how long you've been doing this, I should say you need a rest. Even the comic
strip writers I read get time off every year.
I do notice you are taking it now before the PSJ's are ruled on. I think I have
an idea when you'll be coming back, but don't be ashamed if you need more time.
You haven't just been writing articles, you've been at the center of some very
nasty storms created in the name of greed and control. I'm impressed you didn't
take a breather after that. I will simply close with a quote that seems very
appropriate:
"You're not Superman, you know."

What a great accomplishment Groklaw has been, what a great example for the
future. In the world at large there is so much huffing and puffing, and so many
slogans tossed about; and in so many spheres of life those slogans and that
huffing is what passes for wisdom. In so many regimes of activity the style with
which something is said is the most important component of what is said. So
often we hear things said in a gruff, assertive, authoritative manner and these
things are then allowed to be true because of the manner of
expression.
What a relief it has been since Groklaw was created to have
a place to go where hype and huff and gruff are worthless, and where actual
historic fact and actual law and actual rules of the court are paramount, and
where any statement by any person is treated with appropriate skepticism but
also with proper respect.
Groklaw's creator is largely responsible for
the wonderful thing that Groklaw is. Thanks, PJ.

As I've progressed in my career, taking on more and more challenging
assignments, I've had to consciously pace myself to keep from burning out. I
love my work so much, it seems like play. But it isn't play. It's a grueling
grind that would knock me on my back after a week if I didn't have a burning
desire to pursue it. With that desire, I can keep the ball rolling for a long
time - too long in fact. I have to watch out for warning signs that the ball
needs to stop bouncing around so much. Getting sick is one of those
signs.
You have come so far in the past four years, PJ. From obscurity to a
leading voice in the FL/OSS movement. From a private citizen to one of the
pioneers of legal blogging. Never mind the accolades and regard bordering on
adoration you receive from your activities, the palpable benefit you bring to
the communities you serve must serve as a powerful inducement to keep going.
With that as context, I applaud your decision to take a break. Human beings need
rest. You've earned yours.

Bastardized from the poet who has changed my life:
Rest, heart of a tired world
Hushabye, and go to sleep
These are words you need to take to heart. Your entire existence begins and
ends with you. Faith and ideals can push one beyond the limits of the flesh.
From the little I have learnt of you, your faith and ideals define rigor and
determination.
People have worked themselves to early graves. We need your clarity and
analysis. Without the meat to support the mind, we will lose both. Be well
Pamela, and know the strentgh of thousands is behind you.
A vacation is not sufficient. Vacations are for those with a job. Yours is a
calling. If you are back in less than a month, I will have a suspicion you are
cheating yourself. A sabattical is in order, not a mere vacation.
Like many others, I have a suggestion.
Allegheny National Forest in NW Pa. Pigeon Run creek. Secluded and idyllic, in
winter or in summer. A strength, old and clean, flows through the timbers and
wind there. The waters are clear and the trees speak in tongues one can almost
understand if you are intent on listening.
I recommend 2 works to take with you, no matter your geographic locale.
Kenneth Patchen, 'The Collected Works of Kenneth Patchen'
Annie Dillard, 'A Pilgrim at Tinker Creek' or 'Teaching a Stone to Talk', or any
other of her several books. Both authors are passionate, and amazingly adept at
getting to the truth of living. Their poetry and prose is literally stunning in
it's beauty.
Take your rest Pamela, with our blessings and best hopes. The good fight will
not fade, and your place will be ready to receive you, no matter the length of
seperation or manner of return.
Peace,
VTK

You heroically rode the horse for 3 and a half years. You deserve a good break.
To quote Marc Fluery who has also taken a break (probably not permanent):
"I have done what I can to help Red Hat succeed. People need to understand
that open source is a tsunami that is transforming the software industry in its
wake, and its inevitability is now well beyond challenge or the force of
individual personality."

Groklaw has shined a bright light on SCO's scam lawsuit and also on the whole
ODF affair.
Without such a bright light, these things might go unnoticed within the
industry. How much in the past has Microsoft done dirty tricks in secret,
unnoticed by the industry until the effect becomes obvious. By the time it is
well known and discussed in the trade rags, it is too late.
Groklaw has prevented SCO's scam from going unnoticed. Showing the vast numbers
of inconsistencies and illogic in SCO's court performance.
You have my prayers and best wishes.
Hope you enjoy a well deserved break.

sheer volume of work you've produced [and selfishly ecstatic because i'm a bit
of an information junkie]. i suspect that, like myself, once you get to working

on that thing to the exclusion of most everything else. that is a sure road to
illness. balance is the key. a rest is long, long overdue.

Have a good break!
I meant to comment before now, but, as it happens,
I was struck down with a hum-dinger of a cold on Sunday. Such a bad cold, it
stopped me smoking. I had achiness all over, shivering, being hot and cold,
sleeping lots, and just didn't want to smoke. I got a bit better, and had two
cigarettes, but then I developed a cough which deterred me from smoking any
more. So I didn't. When I was well enough, I went out and bought some nicotine
patches (with the money I'm saving from not smoking), along with some lozenges
and pastilles. Seems my cough might be partly due to my lungs beginning to work
better from not smoking, as well as being due to my cold. I'm hoping it'll help
deter me from smoking as my cold recovers.
A very nice silver lining,
this minor cloud of a hum-dinger of a cold has.
I'm hoping that you,
too, find your break to be a most beneficial thing - it's well
overdue!
:-)

As if it isn't bad enough PJ isn't feeling well, SCO spreads more FUD and kicks
her when she's down:
SCO Vs. Blogger
This sounds more like an attempt by SCO to discredit
someone who has, through proof and documentation, proven that SCO lies on a near
daily basis. One more reason (besides reality) to see SCO lose the Novell
case.

If all is as Pamela says, terrific.
But the timing of her need for a sabbatical certainly is... unlucky. Frankly, as
dastardly as SCO is, and as has been, if Pamela really is ducking out to avoid a
subpoena to provide a deposition in the SCO v IBM case, I am sorry - that is
wrong on about a dozen levels. I won't try to enumerate them all here, but at a
minimum, it sends a message that there is something to hide. It belies Pamela's
past claims that she wants to see the truth come out, and to forward the cause
of justice by participation. It tends to give instant credence to SCO's
apparently outlandish claim that there is no Pamela, that she is a IBM sock
puppet. I don't believe that. But I'm a relatively intelligent, relatively up to
date person. What will the public believe if SCO makes headlines with
"Possible IBM plot unravels when mystery blogger vaporises"? I think
Darl and his ilk are scum, plain and simple. I think the record has given proof
of that many times over. But even while providing a terrific public service, at
what might be great personal sacrifice, Pamela has sometimes taken a somewhat
holier-than-thou approach, which is certainly her right on her blog. But to then
duck out on helping end a long running legal nightmare, when it has been your
recent life's work to document it over the last years, would be unseemly, and
below the standards she purports to stand for.
Please don't hide, PJ.

This latest SCO stunt is so typical of that company.
Attacking a blogger like this is a famously stupid move.
And they still can't find PJ.
I'd say that is very typical of SCO, Not being able to find things and making
stupid moves. Where have I seen that before..

Best wishes, PJ. Get well soon!
SCO must really wish you didn't exist. That's probably why they're claiming it.
:(
To those in any doubt >>>
IBM certainly don't need to resort to creating a person to beat SCO. I know PJ
exists because I emailed her a couple of times and her replies were very
friendly and helpful, and completely informal in tone. Sounded like a real
person to me.
Poor old SCO - just like an ostrich, if they can't see her, she's not real.
And I think they're being foolish over the whole deposition thing. If PJ seems
so pro-IBM as that article on Forbes suggests, then that is only because SCO
have been completely and wholly wrong to begin with.
It is also true that THEY, and not IBM, initiated the litigation. So why would
IBM bother doing anything less than above board against SCO? That's SCO's game,
not IBM's.
PJ is not an alt for IBM, anymore than George Lucas is really the Pope. How
silly and paranoid of SCO to think so.
