SCO's Tec Forum in Full Sway. Two Press Releases Today.
Monday, October 20 2008 @ 02:45 PM EDT

Well, it's time for SCO's Tec Forum, which is what SCO is calling SCOforum this year, and lest the company's press releases get lost to paid services someday and disappear behind their drawbridge, and in harmony with our goal to provide historians with the entire picture, here are a couple of press releases that went out today, one about an upgrade to SCOoffice Server and the other about SCO Mobile Server SDK availability. In case you want to replace Microsoft Exchange with SCO's product or want to help them develop Me Inc., now you have a way.

Some of you will recall that Jeff Hunsaker said this would be perhaps one of the most significant SCOforums in history, and the earlier press release used a quotation from Stephen Norris in which Norris used the royal "we" regarding SCO, the company:

"It is important for SCO customers to understand that we are committed to provide them with world-class products and services," said Steve Norris, Chairman of Stephen Norris Capital Partners. "SCO Tec Forum is an important opportunity for my team to get to know SCO's customers and partners better. We have been impressed with the loyalty and commitment we have seen from SCO's customers and partners during our due diligence, and we will reciprocate," said Norris.
So one can't help but wonder if there will be any news on that front. Anybody there from Stephen Norris Capital Partners? I'm sure you share my curiosity about any results from on the Middle East money-hunting safaris Darl told the bankruptcy court about last month. What? You doubt? The judge believed him. What's wrong with you? My stars, what a bunch of cynics!

Here's what the first press release said when SCO announced Tec Forum, but note the date was later changed to October:
The SCO Group, Inc., (Pink Sheets: SCOXQ), a leading provider of UNIX(R) software technology and mobile services, today announced that SCO Tec Forum 2008 will be held August 10th - 13th at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. SCO Forum, in its 22nd consecutive year, is an opportunity for key customers and partners to come together and hear strategy and direction from company executives. Stephen Norris and Mark Robbins of Stephen Norris Capital Partners (SNCP) who together recently committed to sponsor a reorganization plan of The SCO Group Inc. ("SCO"), will be present to speak with customers about their commitment to SCO's UNIX business. Key topics at this year's Forum event will include introduction and demonstration of SCO's virtualization strategy, UNIX product roadmaps and direction from new members of SCO's management team. SCO Tec Forum 2008 will also include many technical breakout sessions and a hands-on training on Day Three.

"This will be perhaps one of the most significant SCO Forum events in company history," said Jeff Hunsaker, President and Chief Operating Officer of SCO Operations. "We are now anticipating our exit from bankruptcy and charting a new course for the company. Forum will be an excellent opportunity to communicate these developments to our customers and partners, while reaffirming our long-term commitment to them," said Hunsaker. "I have been meeting with customers from around the world over the past few months, and they are very pleased with the strategy and direction of our product roadmap that will be outlined at Forum."

SCO Announces Availability of SCO Mobile Server SDK

Monday October 20, 11:00 am ET
New toolkit allows developers to build powerful web and mobile productivity applications

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SCO Tec Forum -- The SCO Group, Inc., (Pink Sheets: SCOXQ - News), a leading provider of UNIX® software technology and mobile services, today announced that its new software developer toolkit for the SCO Mobile Server(TM) Platform is now available. Built to support the powerful SCO Mobile Server, developers can use this new toolkit to develop custom web and mobile digital services, one of the fastest growing technology markets. The toolkit is the subject of a technical session at SCO Tec Forum this week and is also now available for download from SCO's website.

The SCO Mobile SDK allows developers to enable an existing application for web and mobile services or develop an entirely new application. One of the first successful applications built upon this platform is the Shout Postcard(TM) mobile application (http://www.shoutpostcard.com), a free application that allows users to combine photos, audio, and text into multimedia postcards or web albums. FCMobilelife(TM) (http://www.fcmobilelife.com), developed by The SCO Group and distributed exclusively by FranklinCovey Products, a global leader in effectiveness and productivity tools, is an excellent example of the depth of a web and mobility solution built upon the SCO Mobile Server Platform and now has thousands of users. HipCheck(TM), an enterprise level web and mobile application, and also developed on the SCO Mobile Platform lets users securely monitor their Windows®, Solaris ®, SCO UNIX®, servers, and other UNIX variants servers from a Windows Mobile®, Blackberry®, Treo® or other popular smartphones and take correct corrective action as required.

The SCO Mobile Server SDK enables developers to build client-server applications supporting smartphone clients, browser-based clients and PC-clients. The SDK supports back-end integration with agents and brokers for connections to other servers and applications. Mobile application development with the SDK supports typical mobile development languages including Java (J2ME) on a variety of client OS platforms including BlackBerry devices, and C# for Windows mobile devices. The SCO Mobile Server executes within a Java application server as a Java EE web application. The central value provided by SCO Mobile SDK is the ability to concentrate on the SCO Mobile Server both the servicing of client access as well as the data processing required by the application. Common tasks such as client authentication and mobile application downloads are handled by features of the SCO Mobile Server coupled with programming libraries for building J2ME or .Net clients.

The SCO Mobile Server provides a complete hosting environment for applications built with this SDK. Cost effective and highly scalable, the SCO Mobile Server can be deployed by an enterprise for hosting a custom application, or by a reseller for supporting many enterprises on the same server. SCO can also provide hosting services for SCO Mobile applications.

"This is a significant and positive step forward for SCO's mobile initiatives and is a platform for cloud computing leading the way to Web 3.0," said Jeff Hunsaker, President and Chief Operating Officer, SCO Operations. "SCO has worked diligently to bring this SDK to market to provide developers with a powerful, new application development tool" said Hunsaker. "Built upon the reliability of the UNIX platform, developers can quickly build web and mobile solutions for a wide variety of popular smartphones."

    I have to wonder.....
    Authored by: tiger99 on Monday, October 20 2008 @ 03:16 PM EDT
    Is anyone actually purchasing FCMobilelife(TM)?

Apart from that it seems that all that is new is a minor bug fix for one of the server platforms, the sort of stuff that Linux users hardly even notice if they have automatic updates enabled.

Of course, with almost all the developers having been made redundant, there can be nothing new.....

Can't go on much longer, I think!

SCO Mobile Server SDK? Oh! For Joy!
Authored by: bezz on Monday, October 20 2008 @ 03:21 PM EDT
You mean I can develop code for SCO platforms and field it on my own SCO Mobile
Servers or one of SCO's hosting servers? If my code comes from their SDK and
has touched one of their platforms, does their theory of AIX and Sequent
    copyright infringement apply?

Sign me up no questions asked! I want to develop world-changing applications on
a platform from such a company.

    Hahahaha. Sorry.
The SCO Group, Inc., (Pink Sheets: SCOXQ)
Hahahaha. Sorry, I just can't help bursting out laughing when I read that dismal prefix to what used to be SCO's fluffy PR statements. Kind of removes the gloss right at the outset, doesn't it?

Sounds like they think they are going to take over SCO.

Been there, done that. The first step in selling off the assets, try not to
scare the customers away before you milk them to the limit, then the good old
bait and switch. Abandon the old and switch them to the new, for a price of
    course.

Wait a minute. What a dummy I've been. Now I understand Vista. Dump XP and
get your customer's to upgrade, for a price of course.

    Still in a sour mood!

I don't trust these guys. Heck, their mothers shouldn't trust them. We need to
keep copies, and make sure that there are multiple backups.

Yes, I'm a bit paranoid. TSCOG and Microsoft have reinforced that paranoia.
After all, you aren't paranoid, if they are really out to get you.
